Brandon, Florida is named for John Brandon, the first settler in the area. John Brandon, his wife and their six sons arrived in the present-day Tampa in 1857. Tampa was called Fort Brooke at that time. Originally, Brandon and his family settled in the Seffner area. In 1858, he decided to purchase 40 acres of land in an area that was known as New Hope. In 1867, his wife passed away and he left all of the land to his oldest son, James Brandon. John Brandon left the area and moved to Bartow. James Brandon built a house for his wife that still stands today. It is not known when the town officially changed its name from New Hope to Brandon.
